Shakespeare’s Sonnets Celebrated by the Seven Ages of Man
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts
His Acts being seven ages
-As You Like It – Act II, vii
As a theatre company, Word Made Flesh is one of our basic philosophies. We strive to “give flesh” to the written word, enlivening and becoming that language in a way that is unique to each actor’s experience. There is a living spirit in the work of William Shakespeare, a spark of the divine — and we recognize and honor that gift as we celebrate his 450th birthday.
Spring-boarding into our 3-year celebration of the Bard, we invite you to participate in giving flesh to Shakespeare’s sonnets. We believe that anyone, anywhere, anytime can embody this miraculous and magnificent language — young and old, actors and non-actors, teachers, students, and people of all backgrounds at any stage of life.
Help us celebrate the genius of Shakespeare and explore the enduring, life-changing power of his words by creating an online storybook of all 154 sonnets!
On this site, we offer tips on how to prepare and present a sonnet for this project. As the sonnets are submitted and added to the website, Shakespeare’s face will begin to fill in. Shakespeare’s words, spoken by the seven ages of man, will give him flesh.
You can record a sonnet on your own, with a group of friends, or with your child. You can record your sonnet in your living room, in the car, on the beach, at your favorite coffee shop, in a hot air balloon . . . the sky is the limit.
Most of all, we hope you will discover something new and meaningful as you participate in Word Made Flesh.
